On Thursday 6th October Bannockburn High School’s Global Student Forum group attended a Global Citizenship Conference at Stirling High School. We participated in a variety of interesting workshops including Fair Trade, Food Glorious Food, Olympic Game Legacy, Red Cross, World Vision, African dancing and African drumming. We listened to other schools presentations on their Global Citizenship Projects as well as presenting our own speech regarding Dying for Life, a campaign focused on achieving the fifth UN Millennium Development Goal of reducing the maternal mortality rate by 75% by 2015. Our presentation was very well received and had a thought provoking impact. The shocking difference between maternal mortality rates in the developing world compared to the developed world was surprising to the audience. Pupils were saddened to learn that one woman dies every minute of every day due to lack of health care during pregnancy. We also offered to visit other schools and peer educate pupils on this important issue. If you are interested in finding out more about this issue please contact the school at 01786 813519 or visit www.bannockburnhigh.org.
