The Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award Scheme DofE

May 23rd, 2011
The project is for young people aged 14 to 16 years who volunteer to participate for an hour after school, twice a week, between October and June.

The award provides four experiential modules for candidates. Firstly the Service module involves completing a Junior First Aid Certificate and creates links with voluntary community groups. The Physical Recreation module encourages healthy living and the benefits of exercise, pupils can choose from a range of sports and fitness activities developing their physical skills and their ability to work with others. The Skills module has previously used cooking, music, reading, creative arts and technical studies and allows pupils to learn and develop their competencies in these areas. The Expedition module provides the opportunity for pupils to learn about the outdoors and how they are responsible for the safety of each other and the countryside.

The project collaborates with a number of external agencies to deliver the outcomes of the award. These partners include the St Andrew’s Ambulance ServiceSkill ForceAmnesty International, Eco Schools, Stirling Youth Services and Volunteer Bannockburn High School Teachers from Physical Education, Music, Technical Education and Home Economics. In the past Cancer Research UK has benefited from funds raised by this group.

The project has operated successfully for the past four years and the number of awardees has steadily progressed. This year the Award is being funded by Awards for All from The Big Lottery Fund.
