Physics Department :
S5 - S6 Higher
Entry Level
This course is suitable for those who have achieved Credit passes for both
Knowledge and Understanding and Problem Solving in Standard Grade Physics
and Mathematics. Pupils with a grade 3 in either KU or PS may be accepted
further to discussion with the Principal Teacher and parents.
Course Content.
The course builds on the work covered at Standard
Grade and also introduces pupils to new areas of Physics. The course itself
is very enjoyable, explaining in great detail the Physics behind many common
phenomena such as the nature of light, the simplicity of electricity and
many real life applications of Physics in everyday life. The majority of
pupils develop a genuine insight into the workings of nature and the
Universe. The course is split into 3 units
- Unit 1 – Mechanics and Properties of Matter
-
Unit 2 - Electricity and Electronics
-
Unit 3 – Radiation and Matter
The Physics department considers the completion of Homework to be the
highest priority for every pupil in Higher Physics. Due to the demands of
the course, homework is not considered to be an ‘optional extra’ but
essential to the understanding of new concepts and to the successful
completion of the course. The level of homework and personal study required
is considerable.
Assessment
This is a single 2.5 hour paper
containing questions that require extended answers. The paper is
approximately 40% Knowledge and Understanding and 60% Problem Solving. This
examination determines your final grade at level A, B or C. To be eligible
for the course award, pupils must have passed all Unit tests and the Outcome
3 practical assessment.
Progression
Advanced Higher Physics may be offered if there are sufficient numbers to
support it. The choice of courses at both at college and university is
extremely varied. To find out any further information speak to anyone in the
Physics department who will be more than willing to help.
