Physics Department :
S3 - S4 Standard Grade
Aims
To help pupils realise and understand the impact of Physics
on our lives. The course will develop pupils’ understanding of the
applications of Physics and develop their problem-solving skills. Physics is
a subject that affects many areas of everybody’s life. It is a subject where
boys and girls have an equal chance of success.
Course Content.
The emphasis of the course is on the application of Physics to
everyday technology, explaining the Science behind the things we use. The
course is split into 7 topics:
- 1 Telecommunications
- Looks at the world of communication from early Morse code through the telephone, radio, TV and satellite communication.
- 2 Using Electricity
- Illustrates how we use electricity safely. Explains how we use electricity within the home, demonstrates various useful circuits around the house, car etc and also investigates the operation of a few appliances such as the electric motor.
- 3 Health Physics
- Investigates the caring side of Physics in medicine. In this topic pupils will discover how sound waves can be used to correct problems with eyesight, how lasers and light can be used to cure patients and finally how radiation can be used to diagnose and cure illnesses.
- 4 Electronics
- This unit gives pupils an insight into the way in which simple electronic systems work.
- 5 Transport
- This unit looks into the world of motion, investigating the way in which things move the way they do.
- 6 Energy Matters
- Pupils examine where our energy comes from, how we get it from A to B, what happens to it when we use it and also the need for us to conserve energy.
- 7 Space Physics
- Looks into how we gather information from space, illustrates some of the Principles of space flight and helps pupils to develop a feel for the vastness of space.
The content of the course will be taught using a variety of means including pupil experiments, demonstrations, videos and computer simulations.
