Physics Department :

S3 - S4  Intermediate 1

Aims
To help pupils realise and understand the impact of Physics
on our lives. The course will develop pupils’ understanding of the applications of Physics and develop their problem-solving skills. Physics is a subject that affects many areas of everybody’s life. It is a subject where boys and girls have an equal chance of success.

Course Content.
The course is made up of 6 Units.

  • Telecommunications
  • Practical Electricity
  • Radiations
  • Sound and music
  • Movement
  • Electronics

The content of the course will be taught using a variety of means including pupil experiments, demonstrations, videos and computer simulations.

Assessment
Assessment takes the form of :

    1  End of Unit Test (Outcomes 1 & 2 )
  • There are 6 Unit tests that you must sit and pass, to be able to finish the course. Each test assesses knowledge from the entire Unit. The award is only a Pass or Fail.
    2  Practical Assessment (Outcome 3)
  • You must submit a report of practical work carried out by yourself in class. Your teacher will mark this.
    3  Prelim Examination
  • This will test all work that you have done up to that point. The examination will be in the same format as the examination that you sit in May (see below).
    4  External Examination
  • There is a single 1 ½ hour paper, containing both Knowledge & Understanding and Problem Solving. This Exam determines your final grade at level A, B or C. To be eligible for a Course Award, you must have passed all the Unit tests and submitted at least one satisfactory practical work report.

Ensuring Success
In order to achieve their potential, it is realistic to suggest that all pupils should be doing one hour per week per subject at home carrying out homework tasks and revision. Any student who is willing to do this can be assured of the support and help of all Physics teachers before, during and after school hours.

The course itself is very new and designed to be both practical and enjoyable. There are a lot of experiments and hands-on activities that demonstrate the many real life applications of Physics in everyday life. The majority of pupils develop a good understanding of Physics as a result.
