Course Description
Music with Performing or Music with Technology

Music with Performing
In this element of the course you will perform on 2 instruments, compose music and listen to a wide variety of musical styles

  • Perform on one instrument, minimum grade 5, preparing 15 minutes worth of music over the session
  • Perform on another instrument, minimum grade 5, preparing 10 minutes worth of music over the session.
  • Invent music with evidence of originality, creativity, planning and good use of compositional techniques such as the deployment of selected concepts.
  • Listen to music which is relevant to the course work based on a conceptual approach with theory related work
  • Listening Commentary. A commentary of between 1500 and 2000 words which relates to the study of two or more works or movements.

The emphasis on practical musical activity across the three elements will allow for the development of aural perception, musical imagination, sensitivity and discrimination.

Music With Technology
In this element of the course you will perform on 1 instrument, compose music and listen to a wide variety of musical styles

  • Gain experience in the use of Sound Engineering equipment, eventually making 2 recordings
  • Perform on one instrument, minimum grade 5, preparing 10 minutes work of music over the session.
  • Invent music with evidence of originality, creativity, planning and good use of compositional techniques such as the deployment of selected concepts.
  • Listen to music which is relevant to the course work based on a conceptual approach with theory related work
  • Listening Commentary. A commentary of between 1500 and 2000 words which relates to the study of two or more works or movements.

Assessment Arrangements
Music with Performing:

  • Performing. Both instruments will be assessed in a live performance, where the prepared program will be sampled by the visiting examiner, prepare 15 minutes, sample 10, prepare 10 minutes, sample 6.
  • Inventing will be assessed on completion of folio - and is assessed as pass / fail
  • Listening will be assessed as part of the SQA Exam Diet.
  • Listening Commentary will be assessed pass / fail

Music with Technology:

  • Sound Engineering Extension Unit required to make two stereo master recordings of two contrasting pieces, performed by an ensemble with each piece supported by a session log. Will be assessed on completion of an assessment folio.
  • Performing. One instrument will be assessed in a recorded performance, where the prepared program will be sampled by the external examiner, prepare 10 minutes, sample 6.
  • Inventing will be assessed on completion of folio - and is assessed as pass / fail
  • Listening will be assessed as part of the SQA Exam Diet.
  • Listening Commentary will be assessed pass / fail

Progression
Advanced Higher Grade Music is regarded by University faculties and central institutions as an entrance qualification. It is beneficial to those pursuing a career in Nursery, Primary, Secondary Education, Arts Courses in Further Education and the wider world of the Music Industry.
