Entry level
Standard Grade Modern Studies at levels 1 or 2.
Entry via other subject grade passes at grade 1 or 2 may be accepted – enquiries to Mrs. Kirkwood or Miss Allardyce.

External Assessment
The external assessment will consist of two question papers.

PAPER 1
Pupils will be required to answer four questions (one from each unit, plus an additional question from unit 1 or 3).
Questions will test knowledge and understanding and analysis.

    Unit 1: Political Issues in the United Kingdom
  • Study Theme 1A: Devolved Decision Making in Scotland
  • Study Theme 1D: Electoral Systems and Voting and Political Attitudes
    Unit 2: Social Issues in the United Kingdom
  • Study Theme 2: Wealth and Health Inequalities in the United Kingdom
    Unit 3: International Issues
  • Study Theme 3C: The United States of America

PAPER 2
There will be a decision making exercise based on Study Theme 2: Wealth and Health Inequalities in the United Kingdom. This exercise falls into two parts. The first will consist of a set of sources with short evaluating questions. The second part will comprise a decision making report in which students will be required to use the information given and their own knowledge to make and justify a recommendation through a structured report.
 

Assessment
Pupils must pass 3 internal unit assessments (NABs) to achieve an award. NABs are similar to the questions asked in Paper 1 and 2.

The external assessment will consist of two question papers.

Employers regard Modern Studies as a broad based subject that provides the candidate with valuable skills, and contemporary knowledge of social, political and economic issues relevant in the world today.
