Aims
The main aim of these courses is to enhance pupils' ability to
comunicate competently. This means the ability to speak, listen, to read
and write the kind of language used in everyday situations.
A wide variety of means and contexts is used to develop these skills – individual/paired work/group work, ICT, e-mail, interactive whiteboard, peer assessment, active learning, independent learning - all designed to make languages relevant to the pupils’ general, social, educational and vocational needs.
Content
In Standard Grade the topics covered are as follows:
Self, home, family: school, work, leisure: holidays, travel: food, drink,
fashion, shopping: environment, time, weather; and matters of general
interest to adolescents.
Assessment
Pupils are internally assessed in writing and speaking as part of
the course. There are final assessments in the S3 exams and Prelims in
S4 before the external examsin May. Pupils must complete the internal
exams to be presented for the overall course.
Progression
A Pass at General level Standard Grade allows pupils to continue in S5
with Intermediate 2.
A Pass at Credit level Standard Grade, including Writing, allows pupils to
continue in S5 with Higher.
