Standard Grades 3 or 4 from Fourth Year
Intermediate 1 from Fifth Year
The course extends the work of General Maths or Intermediate 1. It is important
that pupils realise that excellent attendance, self-discipline, maturity and
determination are required for success. The homestudy and revision is important.
Course Description
Intermediate 2 is made up of three units. Each of the units last from 10
to 12 weeks which includes revision and assessment.
The Mathematics Department offers two versions of this course:
Units 1, 2 and 3 or Units 1, 2 and applications
Which of these courses a pupil is allocated to depends on their Standard
Grade performance and progress throughout the year. Pupils may move from one
version of Intermediate 2 to the other as appropriate. If pupils are having
difficulty coping with the Intermediate 2 course they will be moved into
Intermediate 1.
To obtain an Intermediate award, all three unit assessments and the final
external exam must be passed. The contents of each unit is as follows:
Unit 1
- Percentage and Rounding Numbers
- Volumes of solids
- Linear relationships
- Algebraic operations
- brackets and factors
- Properties of the circle
Unit 2
- Trigonometry
- Sine, Cosine Tangent, Area of Triangle, Sine and Cosine rules
- Simultaneous equations
- Graphs, charts and tables
- Statistics
- mean, median, mode and range
- frequency distributions
- standard deviation, probability
Unit 3

Algebraic operations
- fractions, surds and indices
- Quadratic function
- Trigonometry
- graphs of trig. functions
- Trigonometry
- solving equations
Unit 4
- Calculations in a social context
- Logic Diagrams
- Formulae
- Statistical Assignment
Tutorials
Tutorials will take place between 3.45pm and 4.30pm.
