Entry Level
Credit pass in Standard Grade Geography (or another Social Subject) and Standard Grade English (level 1, 2, 3).

Course Description
The course consists of 3 units and an external examination of 2 papers

  • Paper 1 tests Units 1 and 2 and lasts 1 hour 30 minutes
  • Paper 2 tests Unit 3, lasts 1 hour 15 minutes

Unit 1: Physical Environment (40 hours)

    This deals with a range of themes related to the physical world around us. These include:
  • Atmosphere - Global climate change, the impact of climate in West Africa
  • Hydrosphere- hydrological cycle and river systems
  • Lithosphere – glaciated, limestone and coastal landscapes
  • Biosphere – Soils, and plant succession
  •  

Unit 2 : Human Environments (40 hours)

    This deals with a range of themes related to the Human Environment. These include:
  • Population -changes and migration
  • Rural - farming in South east England, South-East Asia and the Amazon Basin
  • Industry – changes and location factors
  • Urban – site factors and urban change

Unit 3: Environmental Interactions (40 hours)

  • Rural Land Resources - Landscapes and the pressures they are under in the UK.
  • Development and Health - Differences in Development within and between Developing Countries – emphasis on health and disease.

In both Unit 1 and Unit 2 a range of Geographical Methods and Techniques is covered. These are also examined in Paper 1.

Assessment
Pupils must pass each of the Units as well as an external written paper

Progression
Higher Geography is now recognised and accepted as a Science Subject for entrance to university or college and permits entrance to a wide range of careers.
A good grade at Higher geography can also lead on to Advanced Higher geography.
