S6 Advanced Higher
Entry Level
A pass in Higher Geography (or any other Social Subject). It is also
recommended that pupils have a pass in Higher English.
Course Description
The Advanced Higher (AH) Geography course builds on the concepts and
skills gained at Higher. However by the end of the year you will have
developed these skills to a very high and sophisticated level!
The main skills you will develop at AH level in Geography are:
- studying independently
- thinking critically and objectively
- communicating clearly and with confidence
- undertaking research
- analysing/ interpreting/ evaluating information
- essay writing
These are all high-order skills which are greatly valued by universities!
The course allows pupils to develop a detailed understanding of aspects of
the contemporary world which are of concern to all citizens. In addition,
the course enables candidates to develop progressively:
- an understanding of the ways in which people and the environment interact in response to physical and human processes and systems at local, national and international scales
- an awareness of spatial relationships and an understanding of the changing world in a balanced, critical and sympathetic way
- a geographical perspective on environmental issues and their significance
- advanced skills in research, analysis, synthesis, evaluation and presentation, including the use of IT
- techniques and terminology to collect, extract, analyse, interpret and explain geographical phenomena
- expertise in the use of a range of maps, diagrams, statistical and fieldwork techniques, written accounts and, where appropriate new technology, to gather, process and communicate information
- a life-long interest in, understanding of, and concern for the environment and its sustainable future
Course Assessment
There are 3 units:

Geographical Methods & Techniques
- This is about the different ways of collecting human and physical data; statistically analysing the data and presenting it. This unit is assessed in the final exam which lasts 2 hours and 30 minutes.
- Geographical Study
- This is a project that is submitted as part of your final coursework folio.
- Geographical Issue
- This is a critical essay that is also submitted as part of your final coursework folio.
Each Unit also has internal assessments that are completed throughout the
course.
