Aims

  • To help pupils to become informed citizens, in particular in the areas of global and environmental citizenship.
  • To give pupils a knowledge and understanding of the physical and human environment. In particular the course examines where various features are, why they are there and the opportunities or problems they present for human activity.
  • To raise pupil awareness of changes in the local, national and global environments and help them to evaluate these changes.
  • To develop in pupils the skills of observing, recording and analysing geographical information.

Content

  • The Physical Environment looks at: Rivers, Glaciers, Weather and the climate zones of the Tropical Rainforests, the Mediterranean Lands, the Hot Deserts and the Arctic Lands.
  • The Human Environment looks at: farming, cities and problems caused by city growth and industrial changes.
  • International Issues looks at: Population change and migration, the Developing World, international alliances problems caused by International trade and aid.
  • Enquiry skills are also an important part of standard grade geography allowing pupils to develop skills in questionnaires and interviews, surveys, field sketches, river fieldwork. We also develop processing techniques allowing pupils to display data gathered in appropriate ways.

Assessment
The work in the course will be assessed throughout third and fourth years (i.e. continuous assessment), and will involve 2 elements:-

    Knowledge and Understanding
  • Understanding the main ideas, words and phrases of the course and being able to apply these appropriately.
    Enquiry skills
  • Drawing valid conclusions from a study of geographical information, generalising and expressing a reasoned point of view based on evidence.
  • Acquiring skills related to geographical information collection and processing.
