Entry to the Course
Higher or Intermediate 2 English 

Course Description
The course comprises two compulsory units.

    1 Media analysis - (80 hours)
  • A critical study of media texts, both film and print.
    2 Media Production - (40 hours)
  • Group production of a media artefact - either film or print.

The course includes a further 40 hours for induction, support, assessment and remediation

Assessment
There will be continuous internal assessment throughout the analysis unit.

Students will also be required to produce an analysis folio containing two written essays of around 2,000 words, as well as an individual production report for the Media Production unit.

There will be a written examination of 2 hours at the end of the course and an unseen Analysis of a Media text in March which will be marked externally.

Progression
Candidates who achieve Higher in Media Studies might progress to:-

  • HNC/D in Communication Studies, Broadcasting, Advertising etc.
  • A degree in Communication Studies, Film Studies, Media Studies.
  • Employment in the Communication Industries.
