Foundation, General and Credit
Aims
- To develop, to the highest possible level for each pupil, the inter-related skills of talking, listening, reading and writing.
- To raise pupils’ awareness of the ways in which the English language works.
- To develop in pupils the powers of clear thinking and critical appreciation.
- To develop in pupils the skills and confidence to deliver an individual presentation and participate in group discussion.
Content
Units of work based on a wide range of fiction (prose / drama / poetry) and
non-fiction material.
A wide range of activities, involving individual, paired and group work, are
built into the course, so that each pupil will learn to be aware of the
various ways in which language is used, by themselves and others, and to
acquire skills which will improve their own language use.
Assessment
Continuous assessment, involving correction and re-drafting is carried out
throughout S3 and S4, especially of those pieces of work which might be
considered for Folio submissions.

S3: Interim Report grades are based on grading of classwork and folio.

S3 Final Report grades are based on grading of classwork along the lines of
the SQA.

S4: Assessment is based on a “prelim” examination designed along the lines
of the SQA exam and is assessed using the same criteria as the SQA.

S4: A folio of work is completed and sent to the SQA for assessment
Talk is assessed on individual and group work over the year using the
criteria issued by the SQA.
