Edinburgh Book Festival 2008
Once again a group of our S2 pupils enjoyed a trip to the Edinburgh Book
Festival on Monday 25th August – a great start to the new term. After a journey
through some wet and windy weather we arrived in plenty of time for the first
author of our visit to be introduced: Julia Bertagna. This Glasgow-born writer
made us think about what the future may hold considering the current chaotic
weather the world is experiencing. Our imaginations were stirred not only
through the images shown on screen but also by the noise of the tent flapping
wildly in the midst of Charlotte Square. It wasn’t difficult to imagine the
floods of her book Genesis coming true!
After a hurried look around the book shop and a quick bite of lunch we went back
to hear what Tim Bowler had to say about his new books. The first ten minutes
were spent laughing at the many weird and wonderful questions he had been asked
by pupils. His manner was so funny we began to wonder if we had stumbled on a
comedian rather than a writer…He then told us of his new thriller series called
Blade about a fourteen year old boy and the dangerous life he leads; the tent
was still with suspense as he read from his second book in the series. Finally
we told us briefly about another new book, just published, called BloodChild. In
usual Tim Bowler style, this book is full of intrigue and mystery. We then
hurried off to find these new books and spend time chatting to the author
himself. All in all, an inspiring and fun day at the Festival.
