Intermediate 1 and Intermediate 2
Aims
The course aims to -
- Provide students with knowledge and understanding of computing technology and concepts
- Develop practical abilities in the use of computing technology
- Develop skills in problem-solving and communications within a computing context
- Develop an appreciation of the applicability and potential of computing systems
- Provide intellectual stimulus and challenge and foster an enjoyment of the subject
Content
During the two years of the course –
Pupils will start in S3 with Intermediate 1 Computing and from there progress to
Intermediate 2. Pupils who are found to be competent at Intermediate 1 will be
given the opportunity to fast track to Intermediate 2 during S3.
Computing at Intermediate 1 covers :

Computer Applications
- Text processing, Spreadsheets, Presentation Packages, Communications
- Multimedia
- Graphics and Movies
- Information and the Internet
- Databases and Internet
Computing at Intermediate 2 covers :
- Software Development (Programming)
-
Systems Theory
-
Multimedia.
Passes in these units are recorded on the pupil certificates but they must
pass the final examination to gain the full award. The courses also have a
coursework element which is marked internally but moderated externally and
counts towards the final examination mark.
At the end of S3 and S4 pupils will sit the appropriate examination for the
course they are following.
Assessment
Each of the units has Learning Outcomes which are assessed internally. If a
pupil fails a Learning Outcome they are given another opportunity to achieve
a pass. The final examination is set by the S.Q.A.
Pupils have the opportunity to go on to Higher Computing in S5.
