Chemistry Department :
S5-S6 Intermediate 2
Entry to the Course
Standard Grade Chemistry at Grades 3 and 4
Standard Grade Biology or Physics at Grades 1 – 4
Standard Grade Science at Grade 3
Course Description :
Intermediate 2 Chemistry is split into 3 main units –
-
Unit 1 - Building Blocks
- This unit looks at elements, compounds and mixtures; factors affecting reaction rates; what everything is made up of; chemical formulae.
-
Unit 2 – Carbon Compounds
- In this unit, chemicals from oil and other related organic substances are investigated.
-
Unit 3 – Acids, Bases and Metals
- Unit 3 examines the idea of acids and bases and their reactions; metals and their properties.
All 3 units will make use of –
- notes
- books
- computer programs
- experiments
- investigations
- the internet
in order to help each student succeed at Intermediate 2 Chemistry.
Assessment
Assessment is similar to Standard Grade Chemistry i.e. Knowledge and
Understanding plus Problem Solving. Practical Abilities are not formally
tested.
There are, however, a number of Prescribed Practical Activities to be
carried out during the course, some of which have to be written up in the
form of Scientific Reports.
Progression
Intermediate 2 Chemistry can be used to widen a student’s knowledge about
the Scientific world and can stand on its own as an award. However,
Intermediate 2 Chemistry can also be used as the first year of a two year
Higher where the student can sit Higher Chemistry the following year.
