S5-S6 Higher
Entry to the Course
Standard Grade Chemistry, gaining a Grade 1 or 2. Pupils with Grade 3 may be
considered.
Course Description :
Higher Chemistry is split into 3 main units -
-
Unit 1 - Energy Matters
- This unit looks at reaction rates, energy changes and calculations involved in chemical reactions.
- In this unit, chemicals from oil and other related organic substances are investigated.
- This unit examines the idea of pH, oxidation, reduction and radioactivity.
All 3 units will make use of -
- notes
- books
- computer programs
- experiments
- investigations
- the internet
in order to help each student to succeed at Higher Chemistry.
Assessment
Assessment is similar to Standard Grade Chemistry i.e. Knowledge and
Understanding plus Problem Solving but Practical Abilities are not formally
tested.
There are, however, a number of Prescribed Practical Activities to be
carried out during the course, one of which has to be written up in the form
of Scientific Reports.
Progression
Higher Chemistry is the basis and/or entrance requirement for a wide range
of courses at College or University or related employment e.g. Chiropody,
Dietetics, Horticulture, Medicine, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy and Veterinary
Medicine.
