S3-S4 Standard Grade
Aim of the Course
To help pupils to be more aware of the part Chemistry plays in their lives, in
industry and in society.
Course Content
The five main areas covered are:
-
1 Chemical Reactions
-
2 Atoms, Compounds and their Properties
-
3 Carbon Chemistry – including fuels, foods, etc.
-
4 Acids and Alkalis
-
5 Metals and electricity
The actual study of Standard Grade Chemistry will be done in a pupil-centred
way: each pupil works at his or her own pace, making use of experimental work,
videos, computer programs, Internet, posters, books, etc to enhance their
knowledge of the subject. Regular check sheets and homework exercises will help
to ensure all pupils are coping with the syllabus.
Assessment.
During the course, pupils are assessed on 3 elements:

1 Knowledge and Understanding
- 2 Problem Solving
- 3 Practical Abilities and Investigations
Assessment takes the form of:
-
1 End of topic tests
- 2 S3 examinations
- 3 Prelim examination (S4)
- 4 Experimental techniques
- 5 External examination (S4)
