Chemistry Department :
S2 Chemistry
Aim of the Course
The course develops and enhances the chemistry knowledge and understanding from
the first year science course. It has been compiled so that a variety of
chemical ideas and practical skills can be learned. The course is arranged into
three parts: Common Gases, Acids and Metals, and Atomic Structure. The course
should allow pupils to be able to make an informed decision when choosing their
Standard Grade options in S2.
Course content
Gases :
After studying this section pupils will know about the following:
- The chemical tests for oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and hydrogen
- What happens when magnesium burns in different gases
- Where do gases come from
- The composition of air
- What happens when substances burn
- Fire Triangle
- Flame proofing
- Air pollution
Acids and Metals:
After studying this section pupils will know about the following:
- the use of pH to measure acidity
- neutralisation
- the reaction of metals with :
oxygen
water
acid - extraction of metals
Atomic Structure :
After studying this section pupils will know about the following:
- about the variety of materials in the world
- what elements and atoms are
- how to represent elements
- about metals and non-metals and how elements vary in their appearance and state
- what atoms and elements are
- about sub-atomic particles, and what atomic number and mass number are
- what isotopes are
- how electrons are arranged within atoms
Assessment
Assessment for S2 pupils is done through class work, homework exercises and
end of unit formal assessments.
