Entry to the Course.
Standard Grade Credit Level 1 or 2

Course Outline.
The course is made up of 3 units:-

Expressive Activity - 1 credit (Still-life Painting)
- Design Activity - 1 credit (Textile or Package)
- Art & Design Studies - 1 credit (Study of Artists and Designers)
The course allows pupils to base their art and design work on their own personal
interests within the topics listed above.
Assessment
To gain the Higher award pupils must pass all unit assessments as well as an
external assessment. The external assessment consists of a three hour
practical assignment and a two hour written exam. Assessment of the units
will occur at frequent intervals throughout the course and pupils will be
given the opportunity to make improvements.
Progression
Pupils can go on to study Advanced Higher in S6. Higher Art & Design is accepted
for a variety of courses at Colleges and Universities. Recently pupils from
Bannockburn High School have qualified as Interior Designers, Fashion Designers
and Jewellery Designers. One pupil is currently studying Animation at Glasgow
School of Art, another is studying Textiles at Edinburgh College of Art and
another is at the Scottish College of Textiles in Galashiels. A number of pupils
have succeeded in their Art and Design courses at Forth Valley College,
receiving prizes, trips abroad and employment as Graphic Designers.
A Higher Art and Design qualification can be used as part of an entrance
requirement for a number of courses at University and College and also towards
the following more specialised professions; teaching art, primary teaching, art
gallery and exhibition work, design industry work including fashion, graphics,
television, media, furniture, interiors, jewellery, art therapy, sculpture,
theatre and costume design, signwriting, printing photography, architecture and
window dressing.
