Art and Design Department :
S5-S6 Advanced Higher
Entry to the Course.
Higher Grade
Course Outline.
The course is made up of 2 units.
- Enquiry: Expressive (2 Credits)
and either
- Design Activity (1 Credit)
or
- Related Studies (1 Credit)
This course provides an opportunity for pupils to do an individual enquiry
enabling them to show their personal ideas, commitment and vision. It
encourages critical thinking and allows creative qualities to be developed
further. It allows pupils to undertake an intensive study within their
chosen field. These studies will show substantial evidence of independent
learning which will allow pupils to take responsibility for determining the
content and overall direction of their work. Pupils will be required to do a
substantial amount of drawing and sketchbook work in their own time. Pupils
will chose a personal topic or theme to study and emphasis will be placed on
discovery and experimentation. Pupils will also be required to support their
work with a minimum number of sketchbooks.
Assessment
A folio which includes all course work will be sent to the SQA for
assessment in June. Pupils must pass all unit assessments as well as the
external assessment.
Progression
Many pupils who chose to study Advanced Higher do so because they want to do
art and design as a career, but pupils who have Higher Art and simply enjoy
the subject can also do Advanced Higher. Pupils who want to apply to Art
College will use their Advanced Higher work for a Port folio which is
required to be submitted to the Art College in March. Pupils must be aware
that they require to have a substantial amount of art and design work in
this folio including drawing.
Careers where pupils can put their artistic skills to use include
architecture, interior design, furniture design, fashion, costume and
textile design, ceramics, visual communication (animation/film photography)
television and electronic imaging.
