Events @ Bannockburn High
Holocaust Memorial Day - 27th January 2009
|
|
Today marks the anniversary of the liberation of the survivors within
Auschwitz Concentration Camp, now known as Holocaust Memorial Day. Auschwitz
was one of the biggest Nazi Extermination Camps situated in Poland. To
commemorate all those who died in such Camps, Bannockburn High School
invited two S4 classes along to hear Linda Newbury discuss her novel,
Sisterland. |
 |
|

 |
During the hour-long presentation we learned about the plot and characters
within the novel, research required for such a book and some of the things
Linda learned whilst writing the novel. We viewed pictures of the Camps as
they stand now and photographs of young Jewish refugees, known as
Kinder-transport, who were sent from Germany to the UK and Ireland in order
to escape persecution and probable death. |
|
The school purchased copies of this novel as well as some of Linda Newbury’s
other books. These will be available in each of the English classrooms for
pupils to read. However our school library also has copies of Sisterland for
those interested in reading about a novel set in present time but which also
reflects back to a sinister time in our recent history.
A thought-provoking and interesting trip for young people living in a world
where persecution and hatred are still apparent.
Our thanks to Linda Newbury and the Mayfield Centre for organising this
event and inviting the pupils of Bannockburn High School along.
