Girls in Sport
The aesthetics standard grade course, which aimed to
increase the number of girls in PE, was entered into the Norwich Union
Competition recently. The course now includes more girl-friendly activities
such as dance, gymnastics, trampolining, netball and volleyball and has
greatly increased the amount of girls choosing SGPE. The public voted on
which initiative they would like to win the award and so far we have
received enough votes to win £1000 and are currently sitting 4th out of 20
schools in Scotland. The top prize is £12,500 and will be awarded to the
School which has most votes. There is still time to vote. Voting forms are
available from Miss Jeffrey or online at

P7 Open Night
The P7 open night will take place on Monday 15th September. This is a
wonderful opportunity for pupils and parents to visit individual departments
and meet with staff and pupils prior to commencing S1.
Bannockburn's Got Talent
Auditions were held last week for Bannockburn’s answer
to the recent TV show. Pupils in S1-6 have been now been selected to
showcase their talents, at two performances, which will take place on
Tuesday 7th and Wednesday 8th October in the school Lecture Theatre at
7.30pm. Tickets priced £4 will be available from the school week beginning
29th September.
Edinburgh Book Festival
Once again a group of our S2 pupils enjoyed a trip to the Edinburgh Book
Festival on Monday 25th August – a great start to the new term. After a
journey through some wet and windy weather we arrived in plenty of time for
the first author of our visit to be introduced: Julia Bertagna. This
Glasgow-born writer made us think about what the future may hold considering
the current chaotic weather the world is experiencing. Our imaginations were
stirred not only through the images shown on screen but also by the noise of
the tent flapping wildly in the midst of Charlotte Square. It wasn’t
difficult to imagine the floods of her book Genesis coming true! After a
hurried look around the book shop and a quick bite of lunch we went back to
hear what Tim Bowler had to say about his new books. The first ten minutes
were spent laughing at the many weird and wonderful questions he had been
asked by pupils. His manner was so funny we began to wonder if we had
stumbled on a comedian rather than a writer…He then told us of his new
thriller series called Blade about a fourteen year old boy and the dangerous
life he leads; the tent was still with suspense as he read from his second
book in the series. Finally we told us briefly about another new book, just
published, called BloodChild. In usual Tim Bowler style, this book is full
of intrigue and mystery. We then hurried off to find these new books and
spend time chatting to the author himself. All in all, an inspiring and fun
day at the Festival.
Rectors' Newsletter
The Rector’s first newsletter of the session was issued last week. In it he
outlined the progress of the school extension, staffing changes for the year
ahead and an up to date calendar for the session, including school closure
days and parents’ evenings. A copy of the newsletter can be obtained from
the school office or click
here.
