Fairtrade Producer Visit
The school was delighted to have a Fair Trade producer join us last week.
Julius Ethang’atha, a tea planter from Kenya, came as part of Fair Trade Week to
discuss with senior pupils how money from Fair Trade has made an impact in his
community. He showed us pictures of a new primary school that had been built,
which allowed people of all ages to return to education – a vital lifeline in
Africa. He told us of a new building at the local hospital that had been built
to allow those in the village and from other close villages to get treatment for
HIV and AIDS. Betsy Reid from the Scottish Fair Trade Forum accompanied Julius,
and she told us of how the Forum was trying to encourage schools to become Fair
Trade schools, our aim for next year. Brian Baker from Stirling Propeller Group
also returned to the school to give us a brief description of what Fair Trade is
and tries to do. Thanks also to Craig Brown and Chris Allen from Sainsburys who
provided much of the Fair Trade produce which was sampled during Fair Trade
week.

Storyteller Visit
Primary 7 pupils in the Bannockburn area were enthralled at a storytelling
event led by Ewan McVicar, a renowned storyteller who also writes songs and
stories. This event was held at Bannockburn High school for those pupils joining
the school in August. The theme of the event was 'Into the Dragon's Cave'
because coming in to high school could feel like entering a Dragon's Cave -full
of myths and scary stories yet a place that also holds treasure and adventure!
After entertaining the pupils with a song and a few stories with a local
flavour, the pupils were encouraged to break in to small groups to write thier
own story. Each group had a teacher from the secondary school and a present S1
pupil to help and scribe for them. All the stories written on the day will be
collated into a book. Along with a copy of Ewan McVicar's latest book and CD,
this collection will be given to each attending primary school. The event was
organised by the English and library departments with a lovely backdrop created
in the Art dept. It was great fun, a great success and many thanks go out to all
who attended.
