Am I allowed to take my child on holiday during the school
term ?
Scottish Executive Education Department Circular 5/03 issued
to all Local Authorities in June 2003 offers guidance on issues relating to
attendance and absence at school.
Parents are asked to make every effort to avoid family holidays during term time
as this can severely disrupt the child’s education and reduces learning time.
Parents should inform the school by letter, before going on holiday, of the
dates involved.
The majority of family holidays taken during term time will be categorised as
unauthorised absence.
The Circular emphasises that schools may only authorise a family holiday during
term time under very exceptional circumstances which may include, for example:
- A family holiday judged to be important to the wellbeing and cohesion of the
family, following serious or terminal illness, bereavement or other traumatic
events.
